Project Updates

May 23, 2023

The anticipated grand opening of U.S. Highway 83 (US-83) is the evening of June 9. The Cherry Street detour and temporary traffic control signs have been removed. Traffic is now directed to the newly constructed US-83. The restrictions to over-width and overlength cargos have been lifted. Remaining work consists of placement of sod, repairs to Cherry Street, and other minor miscellaneous tasks.

March 6, 2023

Weather permitting, construction is scheduled to resume the week of March 13. Work will consist of removing existing concrete pavement, sanitary sewer & water main utilities, storm sewer, grading, concrete pavement and roadway lighting. Additional work will include placing sidewalks, street lighting, sod, roadway paint, and repairing and replacing concrete, as well as other miscellaneous items.

Work will require the closure of 4th Street from Main Street to Cherry Street. Traffic control devices will be placed to shift north/south traffic at the intersection of 4th & Main. Head to head traffic will continue on the new roadway (northbound) lane.

The Cherry Street detour, with a temporary traffic signal at Hwy 20 & Cherry Street, will also be established to detour Hwy 83 traffic. Main Street will remain open to local traffic. Motorists are reminded to drive cautiously in and near work zones, to buckle up, and to put phones down.

Traffic has returned to Main Street and the Cherry Street detour has been suspended. Phase 2 work, which started in the spring of 2022, was 90% complete by mid-summer of 2022. Street lighting work continued into the fall. The remaining work for Phase 2 includes the reconstruction of the intersection of 4th & Main. This work is tentatively scheduled to be completed in the spring of 2023.

Phase 3 work started mid-summer 2022 and is 90% complete. Sidewalks remain to be placed along the east side of the roadway, A Street to Highway 20. Street lighting also remains to be placed. All utility work, roadway surfacing, and driveways have been built for the Main Street section of the project.

Scheduling for the remaining work is in progress, with work expected to begin mid-March 2023. Motorists are reminded to drive cautiously in and near work zones, to buckle up, and to put phones down.
